In his review of the first volume, L.B Bryant of NY Times noted “not only is it a shonen title but it’s a GOOD shonen title” and recommended it be picked up. The series also won the award for “Best Shōnen manga” at the 59th Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2013.An anime adaptation by A-1 Pictures aired in Japan from October 2012 to March 2013, and a second season titled Magi: The Kingdom of Magic began airing in October 2013.
